Match day 8 of the FAWNL got underway on Sunday 3rd October as teams looked to build on their starts to the season.

Brighouse Town 1-1 West Brom
West Brom arrived at the Yorkshire Payments Stadium following a high-scoring second victory of the season the weekend before.
After a tight and tense first half, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. Immediately after the re-start, captain Evie Gallop hit a 30-yard screamer to beat Imogen Maguire between the sticks.
Brighouse, however, stayed in the battle. Just as it looked like the game was drawing to a close, Imogen Porteous-Williams levelled the score to nick a point for her side.
Burnley 3-0 Loughborough Lightning
Burnley have enjoyed a strong run of form winning three games on the bounce since their loss to Derby County at the end of August.
They started right where they’d left off, taking the lead within seven minutes. Nic Worthington was once again on the scoresheet, hammering home her fourth of the season from outside the box.
The visitors battled to get back into it, but it was Burnley who doubled the score with half an hour to play. Elizabeth Hamer set up no. 9 Evie Priestly to net.
The third came through another top Worthington strike to wrap up three more points for the Clarets.
Huddersfield Town 5-1 Stoke City
Huddersfield bounced back from defeat to secure a comfortable win over Stoke City.
Kate Mallin gave her side an early lead when she turned home Brittany Sanderson’s re-bounded effort. Sanderson then hit the back of the net herself, heading home her sixth goal of the campaign. With just over half an hour played, Sanderson hit her second of the game to put the hosts in control.
Stoke did hit back before half-time through Nuala Miszkiel. But Huddersfield continued the scoring immediately after the break. Serena Fletcher notched her first of the season after a mazy run from Katie Stanley. Mallin rounded off the scoring late on.
Middlesbrough 0-3 Fylde
Fylde had been knocked off their stride last week, suffering their first loss of the season. But they bounced back on their travels to Middlesbrough to return to top spot in the table.
After a dominant start, it was Jess Holbrook who sent her side into the lead straight from a corner. Amy Hughes added a second just seven minutes later, heading home a corner from Laura Merrin.
The third and final goal game in the 74th minute. Melanie Bartley converting a Bethany Donoghue cross to ensure victory for her side.
Nottingham Forest 0-2 Derby County
Derby County made it four wins on the trot with a solid win over Nottingham Forest.
4,443 fans piled into The City Ground for this tasty FAWNL affair. But two goals in around three minutes at the end of the first half killed off any hope of a result for the hosts to mark the occasion.
Emily Joyce latched onto a diagonal cross that confused the Forest defence to tap home into an empty net. The in-form Ellie Gilliatt then added a second off a 25-yard free kick.
Forest battled in the second but couldn’t pull one back as Derby moved above them in the table.
Sheffield FC 4-0 Hull City
Sheffield FC earned their second win of the season as they entertained struggling Hull City at the Home of Football.
Yasmin Mason gave the hosts a first half lead with a cool finish. Nicole Kemp doubled the score in the second after a scramble in the box before scoring another off a half-volley. She sealed her hat-trick from the penalty spot after Mason was brought down in the box.
FAWNL SOUTHERN PREMIER
Bridgwater United 3-0 Plymouth Argyle
Bridgwater United bounced back from last week’s defeat to earn a solid victory over Plymouth Argyle.
Their goals on Sunday afternoon were courtesy of Alice Griffiths, who notched all three of them. She opened the scoring after just nine minutes but had to wait for her other two. They eventually came as the game drew to a close. She drilled home a Karmyn Carter assist in the 84th minute before sealing her hat-trick shortly after.
Cardiff City 4-0 Hounslow
Cardiff City hit four against league strugglers Hounslow as they sit 8th in the table.
They opened the scoring shortly before the break when Cori Wills cushioned a header home. And the Cardiff forward added a second in the 47th minute, beating the keeper one-on-one.
Wills sealed her hat-trick shortly after, converting from the spot after Ruby Scahill was brought down. Ellie Sargent added a fourth and final goal in the 65th minute.
Crawley Wasps 1-0 Oxford United
Crawley Wasps moved third in the table after a hard fought, narrow victory over Oxford United.
The only goal of the game came in the 70th minute. Emma Plewa notched her fourth goal of the season, sending home the loose ball after a tussle in the box.
Gillingham 3-0 Portsmouth FC
Gillingham maintained their unbeaten run as they took down Portsmouth at home.
Phoebe Leitch fired them into a first half lead before Melanie Parreno doubled the score mid-way through the second half. Kara Fordjour added a final goal deep into injury time to wrap up the victory.
London Bees 1-3 Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town maintained their 100% record with victory on the road at the Hive.
Zoe Barratt’s cross slipped through Faye Hazleton’s gloves to give the visitors the lead. Sarah Brassero-Carreira added a second shortly after, scoring on her first senior start for her side.
Eloise King added a third in the second half when she turned home Barratt’s cross at the far post. London Bees did pull one back when Danielle Puddefoot converted from the spot but could not mount a comeback.
Southampton FC 9-0 Keynsham Town
Another team enjoying a 100% start is Marieanne Spacey’s Southampton side. They wrapped up an emphatic victory over Keynsham Town on Sunday afternoon.
Laura Rafferty powered home a header with only three minutes on the clock to open the scoring. They doubled their lead with half an hour played through a worldie from Phoebe Williams.
And they ran away with it in the second half. Rafferty got her second while the league’s top scorer, Ella Pusey, notched a hat-trick. There were further goals from Millicent Mott, Sophia Pharoah and Lucia Kendall to wrap up the score.
