A new “World Sevens Football” competition is set to launch this summer with a eight-team tournament taking place in Estoril, Portugal from 21-34 May. It is the first of a series of events that are being planned across the globe.

The 7-a-side tournament will produce short-format games on a half-sized pitch. Each match will consist of two 15-minute halves, with extra time added for tie-breakers. DAZN will provide coverage of the tournament.

There is a commitment to invest $100mn from the co-owner of Gotham FC, Jennifer Macksey, with $5mn of prize money available per event. The winning team will receive $2.5mn.

The organisers are being guided by a player advisory council which includes Tobin Heath, Caroline Seger, Anita Asante, Kelly O’Hara and Laura Georges.

World Sevens Football is designed to elevate the women’s game, providing players with a powerful new platform to showcase their talent, grow their personal brands, and provide economic opportunity in a way that truly reflects their value,” Macksey said. “Building and developing a club takes time; being able to make an immediate impact on women’s football is incredibly exciting, and supporting players and clubs is what we have set out to do.”
