Dutch international Daniëlle van de Donk has become the first signing of the London City Lionesses’ Barclays WSL era.

The 33-year-old midfielder arrives in London following her departure from Lyon. She has signed a two-year deal that will keep her at the club until 2027.

A centurion for the Netherlands (167 caps), she brings a wealth of experience with her. She spent the last four years at Lyon in France where she won the Première Division three times and lifted the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2022. Prior to that, she played for Arsenal for six years, helping them to lift the Barclays WSL in the 2018/2019 campaign.

On the international stage, van de Donk played a crucial role in the Netherland’s Euro 2017 success and also appeared in the subsequent FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in 2019.

“It’s been crazy, I’m feeling really good!” she said on moving to the club. “It’s just such a nice environment to be in, the club really appeals to me, it reminds me of a little family, and I want to be a part of it.”

“I was there [in the Barclays WSL] for six years, and it was very good. I loved it and saw no hesitation in coming back,” she continue. “It’s a good league; the stadiums are full and hopefully we can get more and more fans here too. I’m so excited to meet all of the fans, and I promise that I’ll give 100%, if you do the same for us!”
